Admission requirements

Certificate/Associate Degree Programs

  • at least 18 years old, or
  • have a high school diploma, or
  • have a General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

Bachelor Degree Programs

  • Have a high school diploma, and
  • Pass the 16-credit high school core curriculum with at least a 2.5, and
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5

If you don't meet these requirements, contact an admissions counselor. You may have options to begin a degree or certificate program, such as starting as a pre-undeclared student or as a non-degree student.

Current high school students may upload unofficial in-progress transcripts at the time of application or after submitting their application by logging into the application portal and clicking on the checklist item. Unofficial transcripts may also be emailed to uaf-admissions@alaska.edu. Acceptance becomes final when official transcripts with a posted graduation date are received. To be considered official, transcripts must arrive in sealed envelopes from each institution attended, be directly emailed from an official high school staff member, or be submitted electronically through a secure transcript service. Transcripts emailed by students or faxed transcripts will not be considered official.

As of December 6, 2023, UAF doesn鈥檛 require ACT/SAT scores for admission to any undergraduate degree program. Test scores aren鈥檛 taken into consideration for UAF scholarships. However, a qualifying score is required for some non-UAF scholarship opportunities, such as the Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS). In some cases, test scores may be used in lieu of placement tests for registration or class prerequisites, however, alternative options are available to all students.

Applicants must submit all prior college transcripts. Applicants with fewer than 30 college semester credits must also submit high school transcripts.

UAF鈥檚 discount military tuition pricing eliminates most out-of-pocket expenses, offering both in-person and online undergraduate courses for just $250 per credit hour. Military and veteran applicants must apply to UAF by creating a profile in the . In some cases, students will also need to apply through ArmyIgnitED or another armed services application. When creating your profile, be sure to use the same email address in the application portal as in the ArmyIgnitED application. This is required to match your ArmyIgnitED application in our system and get your UAF application processed.

UAF waives the application fee for applicants using veteran educational benefits and active duty members of the military. 

We accept credits from , which includes Officer and Warrant Officer training, joint military training conducted by other services, and DANTES funded test scores. We also accept credits from . All applicants with JST or CCAF transcripts are required to submit their transcripts to receive VA benefits. This requirement can be waived in certain cases, contact the Department of Military and Veteran Services for more information.

You do not have to be admitted to UAF to apply for your VA educational benefits. You do not have to be approved for your benefits before you apply.

To be considered for admission, we typically require candidates to have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (equivalent to a B grade) and a GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher in their major. To apply, please submit the following materials:

  • Resume
  • Statement of goals
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • GRE* or GMAT test scores (see test scores tab for details.)
  • The major鈥檚 department may ask for additional requirements. Please refer to the graduate degree requirements by major lookup page for additional requirements and materials for your program.

College of Business and Security Management applicants must provide official GRE* or GMAT scores.

Master and Doctor of Philosophy applicants will need to provide official GRE* scores.

Note: Not all programs will require test scores if you have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Refer to the admission requirements of your prospective degree program to determine which tests are required.

You are not considered an international applicant if you are a:

  • US Citizen
  • US Permanent Resident
  • Refugee
  • Undocumented Resident

Since you do not require a student visa to attend UAF, you will not need to complete the additional international application steps.

The admission qualifications for international applicants are the same as domestic applicants with the addition of:

  • Proof of English Proficiency
  • Official diploma for institutions who do not list a degree and graduation date on the transcript

Please refer to the other student types (Freshmen, Transfer or Graduate) for program qualifications.

Minimum required English proficiency:

  • A minimum TOEFL score of 79.
  • A minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
  • Applicants who have completed secondary or baccalaureate education, where the primary language of instruction was English, from one of the following countries or territories are exempt from this requirement.

Requests for exception to this policy may be submitted via email to the Office of Admissions. Acceptable grounds for waiving this requirement may include:

  • Successful completion (C or higher) of a college-level, non-ESL English composition course.
  • A comparable score on another approved exam such as the EdReady exam.

Send official secondary school and/or university transcripts to a NACES approved evaluation service and request a comprehensive course-by-course credential report. Transcripts from Canadian institutions (excluding Quebec) are exempt from this requirement; they may be sent directly from the issuing institution.

After admission, international students are required to provide specific documents as part of the visa process. Students are required to submit the Financial Statement (PDF), Evidence of Funding and Citizenship Document in order to be issued a visa. Connect with the International Student and Scholar Services early to get the process started.

International Students who are applying to an online only degree do not need to fulfill the visa requirements.

Anyone can take classes at UAF. There are no GPA or transcript requirements to be a non-degree seeking student, however some courses require prerequisite coursework or test scores in order to enroll. Please to sign-up for a class.

(Non-degree seeking students are not eligible for financial aid.)

For students who miss the main application deadline, an extension is offered for a $25 late fee in addition to the application fee.

Before you apply late, consider that classes are starting soon and there will be many things to do quickly. Order/submit all of your transcripts right away because delays in submitting transcripts will delay financial aid.

If you are unable to attend during your application term, you may delay your admission up to one year after your original application term. Email uaf-admissions@alaska.edu to request to postpone or visit our acceptance reply form.

$25 late fee for bachelor and graduate applications that are submitted after the published university deadline.

Certificate and Associate applications will be processed in the order that they are received. We encourage you to apply as early as possible. Applying close to the start of classes may impact timelines related to financial aid and transfer credit.

Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The UAF Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is available online at: /orca/files/ASFSR.pdf. The report contains policies and procedures related to campus safety and security (including response to reports of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking), statistics for reports of specific criminal activity, and statistics for fire incidents in student housing facilities.
