ACEP Intern Spotlight: John Venables
There are a number of interns working for ACEP this summer. To highlight them and their work ACEP will be presenting a short synopsis weekly on each throughout the summer in a series titled the “ACEP Intern Spotlight.”
John Venables
Education: Undergraduate at ҹɫ
Field of Study: Electrical Engineering - Power Generation and Control
Focus of Study with ACEP: Case Studies from Rural Alaska - John is performing a case study and analysis of the use of solar power in the Northwest Arctic Borough (NAB). The NAB is working to lower the high energy costs for community buildings that don't qualify for subsidized electrical rates. John is also completing a lessons learned report on an organic rankine cycle machine used by Cordova Electric Cooperative in an attempt to generate extra electrical power by harnessing waste heat from their diesel generators.
Post-Graduation Aspirations: After graduation John would like to stay in Alaska and hopefully work on the progression of renewable energy in Alaska. John is especially interested in the use of hydro-power and hydro-kinetics. John may pursue a masters degree in electrical engineering after a few years of exploring the Alaska’s options.
